Cheap Overseas Holidays

Many of us think we need to save for ages before we can afford a holiday abroad but it’s not always the case. If you’re prepared to do some research and take a flexible approach, cheap overseas holidays can be found in plenty of destinations around the world.

Whether you’re after sun, sea, cultural riches or adventure, a range of low-cost options exist across the globe that will have you packing your bags in no time. And with the emergence of smart operators who package hotels, flights and bonus extras into ready-to-go ‘holiday in a box’ trips, there’s more choice than ever before.

New York doesn’t immediately jump out as a budget destination but keep an eye out for deals, and you’ll find it’s actually quite affordable. You can spend under $200 a day, including airfares, when you stay in a hotel and enjoy budget meals from food stalls. Alternatively, you can explore the city’s free museums and wander through its parks and public spaces. Also look out for events and performances by under-the-radar artists, musicians and comedians (much cheaper than a Broadway show!).

The Caribbean is another great option for a cheap overseas holiday. Puerto Rico is one of the most popular destinations for Australians and has a range of activities to suit all interests. Its rainforests, waterfalls and beaches are stunning, and you can take a tour to see them all for under $500 a person. It’s also a great place for diving and snorkelling and has a wealth of luxury hotels.

Uzbekistan is a beautiful country with Silk Road cities, spectacular Islamic architecture and friendly people. A boutique hostel costs about $30 a night and you can dine for under $5 a meal at local restaurants. Don’t miss the opportunity to try a national dish called plov, which includes rice, carrots and mutton, plus tea.

It’s a little more expensive to travel in Europe, but there are still some bargain-finding gems. Portugal, for example, has a reputation as being among the cheapest Eurozone destinations, and it’s easy to get by on less than $400 a day when you stick with budget accommodation and meals.

If you’re looking for an exciting and affordable getaway, it’s worth checking out Albania. This tiny European country offers mountains, beaches and a rich culture, and while it’s not as well-known as some other destinations in the region, there’s still great value to be found. In fact, prices have actually fallen in recent years.
