The Kokomo Battery Plant Will Create 1,400 Jobs

The Kokomo plant will be the first of its kind in North America and will create more than 1,400 jobs. It will also further cement the city’s position as a leader in the automotive industry as the auto industry shifts to electric vehicles.

The project is expected to be completed in 2025. It will produce lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicle applications. The company says it will also help reduce carbon emissions.

Star Plus Energy is part of a larger project by Stellantis and Samsung SDI to bring more battery manufacturing into the United States. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding for a second U.S. plant under the existing StarPlus Energy joint venture. It’s expected to be operational in 2027 with an initial annual production capacity of 34 gigawatt hours. The companies haven’t disclosed the exact location of the new facility.

IU Bloomington’s Institute for Korean Studies will work with the company to provide resources and education to employees. It plans to teach employees about everyday Korean culture and customs, including how they interact with each other at the workplace.
